SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 2006) - A panel discussion
with women from the Middle East entitled "Voices
of Middle Eastern Women" will take place
on Wednesday, March 8 at 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the
University Room, on the San Jose State University
campus.
The program will raise issues concerning women's
education, employment status, extent of participation
in the political process and other issues to
help understand the situation of women currently
living in the Middle East.
"We hope - in this panel - we will be
able to bring facts, eye witness, and the voice
and living stories of women who are living under
the laws and policies of war & occupation,
fundamentalism, patriarchy... on these issues
- which are mainly shared throughout ME regions
- Together, we hope to bring more visibility
and awareness to the vital issues that affect
Middle Eastern women", said Kayvon Shakibee
the moderator of this panel.
The panelists include women from Iraq, Iran,
Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and
Palestine. Some of the participants are:
Soraya Baha: Afghanistan
Fatma Elashmawi: Egypt
Kayvon D. Shakibee: Iran
Reshma Hyder: Saudi Arabia
Abira Ashfaq: Pakistan
Samia Shoman: Palestine
To commemorate International Women's Day, the
event's goal is to form a union of Middle Eastern
women and others around the world to support
one another in the common struggle against all
forms of imperialism, colonialism and patriarchy.
International Women's Day is an occasion marked
by women's groups around the world. Celebrated
annually since 1908, International Women's Day
emphasizes women's equality worldwide and inspires
women to achieve their full potential.
The day acknowledges women universally for their
significant contributions and the valuable impact
they have had on quality of life for women.
The program is sponsored by SJSU's Mosaic Cross
Cultural Center, Women's Study Program, Anthropology
and Behavioral Science Club and South Bay Mobilization.
