An unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war machine

Dwight Eisenhower in his legendary farewell speech on January 17, 1961).

WHY WE FIGHT, the new film by Eugene Jarecki which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, is an unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war machine, weaving unforgettable personal stories with commentary by a "who's who" of military and beltwar insiders. WHY WE FIGHT launches a bipartisan inquiry into the workings of the military industrial complex and the rise of the American Empire.

Inspired by Dwight Eisenhower's legendary farewell speech (in which he coined the phrase "military industrial complex"), filmmaker Jarecki (THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER) surveys the scorched landscape of a half-century's military adventures, asking how - and telling why - a nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war.

The film moves beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why - why does America fight? What are the forces - political, economic, ideological - that drive us to fight against an ever-changing enemy?

"Frank Capra made a series of films during World War II called WHY WE FIGHT that explored America's reasons for entering the war," Jarecki notes. "Today, with our troops engaged in Iraq and elsewhere for reasons far less clear, I think it's crucial to ask the questions: "Why are we doing what we are doing? What is it doing to others? And what is it doing to us?"

Saturday-Sunday, July 29-30th
8:00am - 8:00pm

Some of us will be fasting in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan and others
who began the Troops Home Fast! on the Fourth of July in Washington, D.C.
Whether you can fast or not, join us on July 29 & 30th, 2006 to demand:

U.S. troops out of Iraq, no permanent bases!
Support an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon!

Peace Camp in downtown San Jose!

Troops Home Fast!

The Troops Home Fast Peace Camp will be set up next weekend (7/29) from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in front of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. library. We are asking all members of the South Bay peace community to participate in one of the following ways:

* Join the Troops Home Fast, in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan and others who are fasting between July 4 and Sept. 21, (International Peace Day). Some of us will fast for 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours...whatever you can do. If you cannot join us in front of the library but want to fast, sign up on the Code Pink web site, so at least you will be counted with the thousands of others fasting on that day: www.troopshomefast.org

* Even if you do not fast, join us in front of the library on Saturday and/or Sunday. We will have a canopy and some chairs -- and of course we encourage you to bring your own chair and plenty of water. We will decorate the Peace Camp with signs and banners to proclaim our demands:
U.S. Troops Out of Iraq NOW, End the Occupation! and Support a Cease Fire in Lebanon, No U.S. Military Aid to Israel!

* There will be thousands of people in downtown San Jose to attend the Grand Prix -- the race is in the area around Cesar Chavez Plaza, so we will not be too close to the noise and craziness. But we hope that people passing by will see our signs and flyers. We need your help in engaging the public in our campaign and will have flyers to pass out and petitions, letters, etc. available for people to sign.

Remember that the people of Gaza and Lebanon are looking to us -- the American people whose tax dollars are paying for Israel's deadly aggression -- to stand with them!
