Who's Next ? Unions Rally Against Excessive
Police Force |
Location:
Gather at 530 Water St, near Jack London Square. March
to City Hall
On April 7th, Oakland police injured peaceful protestors at
the Oakland Port. Then they fired on ILWU Local 10 workers,
who were waiting to get in to work on a Monday morning. The
San Francisco Chronicle reported that police acted at the
direction of shipping companies, and as though they were private
security guards. But the Port is public property, and the
Police Department reports to the people.
Instead of protecting workers and respecting the rights of
protestors, police injured nine members of the Longshore union
- sending five to local hospitals for treatment. The Oakland
City Council is investigating both the excessive use of force
and the police's pre-demonstration meetings with corporate
executives.
Working people want to know: Who's Next ?
Come show the Oakland Police that working people and the community
will stick together to demand accountability !

Alameda County, AFL-CIO (510) 632-4242.

|
Sponsored by Modern Times Bookstore, San Francisco
**Off site event at the New College of California
Richard Heinberg: The Party’s Over: Oil, War and the
Fate of Industrial Societies (New Society) The world is at
the end of an historic era of cheap oil, and there has been
very little attention paid to how to substitute for oil when
our fossil fuel party ends. Author Richard Heinberg outlines
the problem, as well as the alternatives - that are not very
encouraging - and recommends how we might approach this imminent
transition with the least of harm to our families, our communities,
our bioregions and the wider world. Of special importance
at this time of would-be regime change, the forward by ex-oil
executive Collin Campbell outlines the full dimensions of
its timeliness. For more information call 415-437-3497

SANTA CLARA COALITION MEETING TO OPPOSE
THE PATRIOT ACT
|
Location: Council on American Islamic Relations,
3000 Scott Blvd. Ste. 104, Santa Clara
It's no secret that since September 11th, the federal government
has engaged in a massive crackdown on civil liberties. Muslims,
Arabs, and South-Asians have been rounded up for interrogations,
detentions, and deportations. FBI agents have been authorized
to spy on political and religious gatherings. And the Patriot
Act threatens all of us with its provisions for expanded surveillance
and invasions of privacy.
75 cities and counties nationwide have passed resolutions
opposed to the Patriot Act and this crackdown on civil liberties.
With the Bush Administration about to introduce "Patriot
Act II", it is important for Congress to know that there
is local opposition. That is why it is critical that Santa
Clara County take a stand for civil liberties and pass a resolution
against the Patriot Act.
On Wednesday, April 2nd, there will be a meeting for people
and organizations in Santa Clara County interested in participating
in such an effort. The meeting will occur on Wednesday, April
2nd at 7 PM. Dahlia Eltoumi, Public Relations Director with
the Northern California branch of the Council on American
Islamic Relations, will be hosting our meeting at the CAIR
offices at 3000 Scott Blvd. Ste. 104, Santa Clara. Their phone
number is 408-986-9874.
If you would like to participate in this effort, please RSVP
to
sbery@aclunc.org.
